MH370 search: 'Object of interest' found on Western Australian coast

Australian officials say an "object of interest" in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has been found, but Malaysia authorities said it was too early to tell if it is a real lead. Australian Transport Safety Bureau Chief Commissioner Martin Dolan described the object as appearing to be sheet metal with rivets, and said it was recovered on the coast of Western Australia. "It's sufficiently interesting for us to take a look at the photographs," he said. "We… (edition.cnn.com) Meer...

Flight 370: Underwater drones find nothing after scouring half of search area

The underwater drone scanning for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 finished its seventh mission Sunday, having covered about half its intended territory without finding any sign of the missing plane. This has been the case for 44 days now, which seems like an eternity for the relatives of the 239 passengers and crew on board, still hoping for a miracle or, at least, closure. The Bluefin-21 drone started its eighth mission soon after the previous one ended Sunday morning, surveying the bottom of the… (edition.cnn.com) Meer...

Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 Shot Down Over Ukraine

The Malaysia Airlines plane, which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was travelling at an altitude of 10km (6.2 miles) when it was shot down, Russia's Interfax reported. The Boeing 777 was brought down by a Buk ground-to-air missile, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry quoted by the news agency said. The adviser said 280 passengers and 15 crew members who were on the plane are all believed to have died. (flightaware.com) Meer...

VIDEO: Breathtaking Boeing 747 Cockpit Scenes

Every now and again, we come across a video that so perfectly captures the magic of aviation, we can’t help but share it. Today, we came across a three minute video capturing moments inside a Boeing 747-400. We couldn’t discern, for sure, what carrier it is or if it encompasses a single flight or clips from multiple. It does look like it starts off in Anchorage, however. (www.liveleak.com) Meer...

Confessions of a TSA Agent

I hated it from the beginning. It was a job that had me patting down the crotches of children, the elderly and even infants as part of the post-9/11 airport security show. Once, in 2008, I had to confiscate a bottle of alcohol from a group of Marines coming home from Afghanistan. It was celebration champagne intended for one of the men in the group—a young, decorated soldier. He was in a wheelchair, both legs lost to an I.E.D., and it fell to me to tell this kid who would never walk again that… (www.politico.com) Meer...

What are These Giant Concrete Arrows Across the American Landscape?

In the 1920s, America began coast-to-coast Airmail service, but the pioneer pilots had trouble navigating the route, since navigation charts of the day were fugazi and you couldn't exactly pull over to ask a farmer for directions. And traveling at night, when it would have been most efficient, or in bad weather was impossible. To solve this Congress then funded these gi-normous arrow-shaped Airmail Beacons, some up to 70 feet long, to trace a route across the country. (www.core77.com) Meer...

Off-Duty Bomber Pilot Helps Land a United 737 After Captain Passes Out

At that moment, Gongol thought it was a medical emergency with a first class passenger, his instincts told him to stay seated and stay out of the way. A fourth call went out, "are there any non-revenue pilots on board, please ring your call button." Immediately, Gongol realized the pilot was the patient. He looked to his wife; as she gave him a nod, Gongol pressed his button and headed toward the flight deck. (www.afspc.af.mil) Meer...

American Airlines To Phase Out Complimentary Cabin Pressurization

FT. WORTH, TX—Explaining that the costs of the service have grown too high in recent years, American Airlines announced Tuesday that it will no longer offer free cabin pressurization to passengers starting March 15. “Unfortunately, to stay competitive as a legacy carrier in today’s air travel market, it no longer makes economic sense for us to provide breathable air at altitude,” said American Airlines CEO Doug Parker, noting that despite the cutbacks, air pressurization would still be available… (www.theonion.com) Meer...

Americans and Australians Believe they have found MH370

After 2 weeks, plus calculations of final location from satecom pings, followed by a satellite search of area has found 2 distinct pieces of potential MH370 debris, and now sorties of a US P-8 and an Aussie P-3. A live abcnews report minutes ago from onboard the P-8, relays that the crew picked up significant radar hits and have taken photos to be analyzed once back. Australian ships are heading out. This is the most promising prospect in finding the missing plane. (www.usatoday.com) Meer...

Reporter stopped by TSA agent who didn't know District of Columbia is in US

When Gray handed the man his driver's license the agent demanded to see Gray's passport. Grays told the agent he wasn't carrying his passport and asked why he needed it. The agent said he didn't recognize the license. Gray said he asked the agent if he knew what the District of Columbia is, and after a brief conversation Gray realized the man did not know. Gray was able to get through security and then stopped to complain to a TSA supervisor. Critics of the TSA said that what happened to Gray is… (www.wftv.com) Meer...

Iran Air 727 lands without nose gear. Nice job.

Gotta admit, when a fellow aviator type, a master of the fine art of subtle sarcasm, sent me this link I didn't expect what I saw. It would be hard to improve on the technique, and this guy probably has more time in a 727 than Len Morgan did. (www.youtube.com) Meer...

Respect the Sign

Turbulence is a daily reality in aviation, but that doesn’t stop all pilots from doing their best to steer clear of it. The possible absence of visual clues where turbulence resides forces flight crews to rely on their knowledge of its causes as well as reports from other nearby aircraft to avoid it. Although a recent trend of turbulence related injuries might substantiate a dose of fear in the mind of some passengers, the likelihood of aircraft damage resulting in a crash is highly remote.…

FAA: Go away!

If you are a pilot, you have likely heard the unofficial slogan of the FAA, "We're not happy until you're not happy." Like most idioms, there is often a bit of truth to this. Any pilot who has crossed a FAA inspector knows how miserable they can make your life. Pilots have very few rights as an airman certificate is considered a 'privilege', rather than a right. However, these injustices hardly touch on the significance behind the FAA's motto. It is much more complex than a few bad…

FlightPrep sues AOPA

Remember when FlightPrep sued (and shutdown) RunwayFinder and then threatened dozens of others, which resulted in a massive backlash from the aviation community? Now, a couple years later, they've renamed ("SD holdings") and have sued AOPA . . . for $66,000,000. I'm not sure if anyone uses FlightPrep products still, but I'm sure this desperate attempt won't help their sales. (www.generalaviationnews.com) Meer...
